Sekishu washi has a 1,300-year history, which is said to have started in the Nara period (710-794) by Kakinomoto Hitomaro, and has been handed down as a traditional craft.
With its elegant, delicate sheen and softness, it is used for shoji paper, calligraphy paper, graduation awards for local children and, more recently, for the restoration of cultural assets such as Nijo Castle.
